hiking and backpacking in cold weather

You need to wear clothes that will block the wind and are water proof. As you get hot you can
remove some of the clothing and place them in your backpack. You don't want to start sweating this can bring on chills from the wet clothing. Most outdoor stores will carry light, water proof clothing for backpacking in the winter. If you are hiking in snow wear polarized sunglasses to block the glare from the snow. You should not invest in cheap boots you need boots that are waterproof and insulated.  You should take along a  pack of water proof matches and a small sterno unit. You can use this to heat up some tea or soup when you take a break. You should take along high calorie foods since you will burn more calories when hiking in the cold weather. Any kind of fatty food that you can carry will help keep up your energy. High protein drinks can be purchased in powder form and mixed with water are also great to have.  If you are hiking in snow country you can melt the snow. Any type of cheese products will contain plenty of fat. High energy bars are light weight and can be stored in your backpack.  When hiking and backpacking in the winter it is important to pack as light as you can.

How to choose hiking boots

Lightweight hiking shoes are so much nicer! Don't settle for hiking boots until you are sure your ankle problems are not due to a lack of exercise. It isn't all about the weight. In a good pair of running shoes your feet will stay cooler than in hiking boots. This isn't a small matter. Cooler means fewer blisters. Blistered feet can be a serious problem your feet are all you have to carry you out of that trail. I stopped getting blisters. You don't mean you have had fewer blisters. Thus you mean haven't had any blisters on your feet at all in over many years. Have you had one blister after a 110-mile 7-day trek in the Rockies, for example. One supposed advantage of hiking boots is that they keep your feet drier. You sweat inside those boots, and even the best waterproof breathable hiking boots will leave your feet damp from this alone. Add to that that they are rarely entirely waterproof, and you just don't see any advantage here. Hiking shoes, on the other hand, breath well, and when they get well, they dry quickly.

When you have been bitten by an insect

Biting insects can hide in your foot wear. If you do get an insect bite it usually can be treated on the spot. Mosquitoes, gnats and flees bites will not show up immediately so you need to watch the area for any signs of infection. Tick bites you need to cut off the oxygen to the head of the tick to remove the tick safely.   When you have been bitten by an insect you should stop all strenuous activity. Watch for hives and bee's nests around hollow rotted logs and low lying tree limbs too. Black Flies  have a terrible and nasty insect bite that can itch and sting,  black flies will also swarm over you, they will crawl and wiggle to get under clothing to get your skin and bite Unfortunately Deet doesn't work as very good to repel blackflies like it does for mosquitoes When you are stung by a bee or wasp remove the stinger gently and do not squeeze it this could release more venom. If available you need to ice the area of the bite or apple a cold compress. You can use antipruritic creams that can be applied to the area of the bite and keep it clean. If you notice that you are having faintness, difficulty breathing and coughing you could be having a bad reaction to the bite. You need to get to the emergency room immediately or to the nearest doctor.   Watch for redness and swelling in the area of the insect bite. You can purchase first aid kits that are compact and fit into your backpack.

water sources now have Giardia

This is just something to remember for emergencies, though. Always purify water from lakes, ponds, swamps, springs, or streams. Even deep in the wilderness, most water sources now have Giardia or other unhealthy bacteria and viruses.Water purification by boiling works fine. Just boil for a minute or two and you are usually okay. The problem is that it is just too much trouble for backpacking. Do you want to stop several times daily to set up your stove and boil enough water to fill your water bottles?First, how much water do you need? This has no simple answer. Your fluid requirements will vary greatly depending on the environment you are in and what you are doing.
