Skunks and skunk odor

Once you have determined that a skunk is digging under some part of your property. You should close off all holes leading to it's den. If the skunk is pregnant she will try and get back into her den. You should not leave any garbage out in the open. Make sure if you have a pet that you do not leave any pet food out. If you have any piles or stacks of lumber ,fire wood, make sure it is stacked neatly and watch for skunks to try and burrow under the stacks. Skunks will spray you if they feel threatened.
You should clear your yard of wood and rock piles, use screening or elevate sheds, openings under concrete slabs and porches you should install wire mesh. If you decide to try and trap a skunk you need to use a Havahart trap which can be baited with fruits, apples, smelly fish, sardines. The best thing to do is call an expert to come and get rid of the skunk for you. You can also put mothballs or ammonia soaked rags in the den opening. You should not use poisons when getting rid of skunks other pets or animals could ingest it.
If you get skunk odor on your skin try this. Wash your skin with carbolic soap and water, tomato juice or vinegar. You can also try this 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide,1/4 cup baking soda , 1 teaspoon liquid soap laundry or dishwashing soap lemon scented. Try washing with tomato juice or diluted vinegar you should take action quickly. Throw away any clothes that are saturated with skunk spray.

IODINE WATER PURIFICATION TABLETS

Chlorine-releasing compound can not be relied upon in semi-tropical and tropical areas.
Water in those regions must be sterilized either by boiling or by iodine water purification tablets containing the active ingredient Tetraglycine Hydroperiodine, These measures have been adopted as standard by the armed services of the USA.
These tablets have been proved effective against all the common water-borne bacteria. Added to water each tablet frees 8 milligrams of iodine which act as a water purification factor.
One tablet will purify one quart of water. These tablets too must be kept dry. The bottle must be recapped tightly after opening.
Step 1 Add one tablet to a quart of water in container with cap.
Step 2 Wait 3 minutes.
Step 3 Shake water thoroughly, allowing a little water to leak out and disinfect the screw threads before tightening the cap.
Step 4 Wait 10 minutes before drinking or adding beverage powders and if water is very cold, wait 20 minutes.
Step 5 If water contains decaying vegetation or is murky and discolored, use 2 tablets for every one quart.
Step 6 Make certain that the iodine disinfects a good amount of water.

Food in the wilds

Even when you prepare for emergencies, the idea of cooking with all your dehydrated food or preparing full meals can be daunting. While it's a good idea to have some preparations, no matter what they are, it's a better idea to have everything planned out so you won't have to stress and waste time preparing meals during an emergency. That's why MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) are so convenient! An MRE can be eaten cold right out of the pouch, but they always taste better hot, so these meals come pre-packaged with a flameless heater. These convenient heaters only require a tablespoon of water, which is included in these meals, and produce enough heat to warm your MRE in a matter of minutes without having to light a stove or clean any cookware.

Clean water prevent dehydration

This will help prevent dehydration and make sure to avoid caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks. If your urine is dark in color you are not getting enough fluids and need to drink more. Proper hydration is critical in preventing heat illnesses such as dehydration and heat exposure. If you are not sweating as normal this could be a sign of dehydration.
You need to ware the proper clothing. Light colored, light weight and porous clothing are preferred to heavy clothing. You should not wear sweat suits or rubber type clothing in the heat. This type of clothing increases humidity close to the skin and can cause heat illnesses. On hot humid days if you are wearing a hat you need to remove it every now and then to allow your body to cool down since most of the body heat will escape through your head. If you are having muscle cramps you need to take in more electrolytes. Rainwater collected in clean containers or in plants is usually safe for drinking. This is just something to remember for emergencies, though. Always purify water from lakes, ponds, swamps, springs, or streams. Even deep in the wilderness, most water sources now have Giardia or other unhealthy bacteria and viruses.
Water purification by boiling works fine. Just boil for a minute or two and you are usually okay. The problem is that it is just too much trouble for backpacking. Do you want to stop several times daily to set up your stove and boil enough water to fill your water bottles?First, how much water do you need? This has no simple answer. Your fluid requirements will vary greatly depending on the environment you are in and what you are doing. Backpacking in the Arizona desert, you may be drinking two gallons of water per day. Camping in cooler locations, and not hiking much, you could get by on a fourth of that.
bottom line? Drink as much as you need. If you are very thirsty, or your urine is very yellow, you probably should be drinking more. The important question is this:
How much drinking water do you need to carry to safely and conveniently get you from one water supply to the next?

Griddles are also great for cooking while camping

You can make pancakes and eggs and many other means with a griddle. French toast is a camp favorite. Blend eggs with milk adding a bit of sugar dip the bread in this and fry on a greased griddle. Butter and maple syrup can be used as toppings. When using the griddle make sure to not get the fire to high it is better to use them over coals so the flames do not hit the food. you can also buy cooking kits at your local outdoor store they will include all the different camping cookware that you will need. Aluminum kit are the most popular. You should plan your meals well in advance of your camping trip. Perishable foods should be prepare first since they can spoil very fast. Make sure to pack certain foods like eggs carefully. Moisture proof food bags are made of plastic great for foods like sugar, flour, mixes ,salt and pepper. Make a list of the supplies and make sure to figure how much the item will weigh. The lighter the better remember you have to pack and carry and also carry out your trash. You can write out the daily menu which will go along way in staying focused when preparing meals during a busy camping trip. Remember to take along a sharp knife this important for cutting and preparing fish and meats. The wise choise of a camp knife is the smallest and make sure to buy it from a reputable dealer. The knife blade should be 4 to 5 inches in length.

MRE Survival Food

If you bring soap, make it biodegradable and use very little. Wash away from water sources. Rub water on yourself, lather up, and slowly rinse off by pouring water over yourself. Dome right, you can get a good shower from a liter of water. Washing without soap works well enough on short trips.
There are many who think we should essentially have no contact with nature except to walk through it. I don't buy that idea. Wash up in that lake or stream - just don't use shampoo or soap.Shake off the water and stand in the sun for a moment. When the weather is fine you'll dry quickly from hiking in any case. I often use any clothing I have as a towel, and let it hang from the pack to dry.
A handkerchief can be used for simple "sponge baths." Get it wet and wipe yourself down, or at least wash out your underarms. The handkerchief should be rinsed out away from stream and lakes.
These MRE meals are made by the same manufacturer that makes the miliatry's MREs. They are 100% self-contained, individually packaged, and will store for a minimum of 5 years under proper conditions. The only thing that is different from these MREs and the military grade is they do not come with a stick of chewing gum and a hot salsa packet.

Lost in the woods with no food?

The inner bark (the soft white part) of pine trees is edible. Palatability is another matter, and varies from species to species. I have found white pine to be tolerable. Strip some bark off the tree, scrape the inner bark from the rougher outer layer, and boil it for best digestion.

In cold weather, coat your feet with antiperspirant for several days before a backpacking trip. This will stop them from sweating too much. This means drier, and therefore warmer feet.

Pack Covers
Don't use a pack cover. It is just too much extra weight. Most packs are relatively rainproof now in any case. It can help to put the contents of your pack into several plastic bags, just in case the pack leaks. This will add about an ounce - much less than any pack cover.
Whistles
A whistle can be a good thing to have in an emergency. If you bring one, make it a simple plastic one. If it weighs an ounce, you bought a heavy one.
Radio
Bring a radio if you really think it will add to your trip, look for one of those little ones that attach to your belt and have a tiny ear plug. They weigh less than two ounces.

Hiking Gear To Avoid
If you really want to go light, avoid anything that is just "gimmicky," and doesn't add any substantial convenience or value. In this category I would include seats, reflector ovens, forks, coffee pots, neck coolers, binoculars, chemical hand warmers, electric socks, thermos bottles, cups, thermometers, towels, shaving mirrors, tents, and sleeping bags.
Key Points
1. Be sure it is useful, and not just interesting, before adding it to your packing list.
2. Keep your hiking gear lightweight.
